Distinguishing features: Red algae with fan-like dichotomous branching. Frond is mostly flat. Has a blue iridescence underwater and in some lighting.
Easily confused species and differentiation: Mastocarpus stellatus (MAST), also known as false irish moss. Chondrus has a flat stipe/thalli, although the edges of the blades might be curly. See here for the definitive guide.
Extended Description: Can be found intertidally or in the shallow subtidal. When reproductive, it will have oval shaped bumps on the edges.
